The thinking queer’s forum

The queerest of minds come together at the Seymour Centre on February 25 to discuss the tough issues affecting our community.

Sponsored by Google, the nine thought-provoking sessions feature influential, academic and creative special guests to stimulate the audience’s mind.

Lawyer, social justice activist and queer Muslim Alyena Mohummadally will discuss how she reconciles her religious identity with her sexuality.

‘Homosexual: Oppression and Liberation’ sees activists and historians explore the initial impact of the groundbreaking book of the same name and its long-term significance. Special guests will include the book’s author, Dennis Altman.

Google will present two queer thinking sessions, ‘Queer Career’ and ‘Activism in the Internet Age’.

‘Queer Career’ will examine what it means to be a LGBT business leader in the ever-changing business landscape.

‘Activism in the Internet Age’ will look at the new challenges and opportunities that arise from the worldwide web.

Celebrating 30 years in business, The Bookshop Darlinghurst invites you to have a drink and listen to authors reading from their own work or paying tribute to past writers. This event will be hosted by The Bookshop owner Les McDonald and author Graeme Aitken (pictured).

The annual Sydney Mardi Gras short story competition award-winners will read their stories. This year writers used the theme of ‘Heroes’ for inspiration. Entry is free.

And for the more philosophical, there’s the lecture ‘Willful Queers: A Queer History of Will’, presented by Sydney Ideas and the Department of Gender and Cultural Studies at Sydney University.

INFO: February 25, noon-8pm. Tickets: Adult $15, Concession/ MG member $12. www.mardigras.org.au
