Bake-Off celebrates 25 years

The Bobby Goldsmith Foundation’s popular Bake-Off will celebrate its 25th anniversary with a ‘silver jubilee’ event at Slide on Sunday, June 3.

“This is our silver anniversary, so if people want to make silver cakes, that’d be fantastic,” BGF chief executive officer David Riddell told the Star Observer.

“If people want to give us silver, even better.”

Popular Sydney drag queen Verushka Darling will MC the event, and aerial performers El’Circo will entertain the crowds with their double trapeze.

But Bake-Off’s main focus is always the array of culinary creations. There were 63 entries across seven categories in last year’s event, and Riddell said he was hoping to see even more this year.

Riddell stressed the importance of the Bake-Off as one of BGF’s key fundraising events.

“[BGF] has been around for so long that some people can get blasé, but the need is still great,” he said.

“We have 1200 clients and take on another 200 every year. Our oldest client’s 85 and our youngest is 18 months.

“Given that the government’s moving towards treatment as prevention — getting people on to medications earlier — there’s clearly a greater role for us to play, because we fund those anti-retrovirals for people on low incomes.”

Entry into Bake-Off is $15 at the door. Doors will open at 2pm with cake viewing. The auction will start at 4pm.

Items to be auctioned include a seven-night stay in a luxury chalet in Queenstown, New Zealand, a five-course chef’s dinner for eight prepared in your own home, and tickets to Legally Blonde: The Musical.

Keen bakers wanting to submit their creations in the Bake-Off have until 3pm June 1 to register. Entry forms are available on BGF’s website.

Slide will host the official after-party with DJs and dancing from 6pm before the party continues at Stonewall from 7pm.

“All the money we give to people for financial assistance comes from events like these,” Riddell said.

“That’s why its really important that people turn up and have fun.”
