LGBTI rights under threat: Labor MP

Queensland’s controversial rollback of civil union ceremonies has shown a worrying trend for LGBTI rights across conservative state governments, state Labor MP Martin Foley has said.

The Albert Park MP said many LGBTI activists were rightly concerned about reformist bills being “hijacked” by conservatives for further rollback.

Foley highlighted changes the Victorian Liberal-National Government made to the Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Act last year that allowed religious organisations to discriminate on the grounds of sexuality and gender diversity.

“The community should be under no illusion that despite the occasional pink-friendly incarnations of Liberal MPs, their track record shows them to be a roadblock on the way to building a human rights framework for equality for our LGBTI citizens,” he said.

NSW Liberal premier Barry O’Farrell allowed a conscience vote on a marriage equality motion in Parliament’s Upper House last month.

  1. Got to love being the football that the politicians are kicking around!

How nice of a Labor MP to tell us how nasty Liberal MPs can be – all the while his own dear leader is adamant that homosexuals don’t deserve equal rights!

So perhaps his statement would be better worded as “The community should be under no illusion that despite the occasional pink-friendly incarnations of LABOR AND LIBERAL MPs, their track record shows them to be a roadblock on the way to building a human rights framework for equality for our LGBTI citizens”.

What’s good for the goose ..

  2. Oh cry me a river….??!!
GAY ppl. Should be under no illusions that on the HANSARD PARLIAMENTARY RECORD, Labor, then in opposition, happily voted in marriage inequality in 2004 which specifically states that same sex couples were to be excluded.
Our present Attorney General, NICOLA ROXON was like a cheer leader at a pro marriage fest held in the great hall of parliament afterwards with christian bigots. I am waiting with baited breath to see how many exemptions she gives faith based organizations with the revamped federal anti-discrimination law due out at the end of the year. No doubt there will be the usual bigotry and enshrined discrimination that she will spin called….”getting the balance right.”

The QLD Civil Unions was done at the eleventh hour of a dying labor govt. THEY HAD MORE THAN 10 YEARS TO FIX MARRIAGE INEQUALITY!!! It is token gesture done at the last minute to make them look good. And all of the chest beating about gay panic defence and unequal laws on gay age of consent?? They sat on their hands and did nothing!!!
    Wake up and VOTE GREEN.
