Ooh aah … she’s back again

Ooh aah … she’s back again

She will forever be known as the woman who brought Ooh Aah … Just A Little Bit into the public discourse, but Gina G isn’t about to let the ’90s define her.

The now Los Angeles-based performer is bringing her first major single since 2006 to Australia this week. Complete with an alpha-numeric textonym spelling, Next 2 U has modern pop-dance written all over it.

“It’s super radio-friendly, catchy and infectious with a sing-along chorus,” the singer said.

The single was co-written by Billy Pace, who wrote Celine Dion’s Let’s Talk About Love album, and Duanne Morrison, the brains behind Madison Avenue’s hit, Don’t Call Me Baby. Gina G’s long-term writing partner, Johnny X, was also back on board for the new release.

Since her decision to explore musical opportunities in the UK brought about that famous single — which stayed in the US Billboard top 10 for 12 weeks — Gina G has become a mother to two children.

She said she was looking forward to her Australian homecoming, which will include filming the clip for Next 2 U at the JOY 94.9 radiothon this Friday and a special appearance at Rogue Knights during the Queen’s birthday long weekend.

“My gay fans are the reason I am doing any of this. You guys are life and death to me baby!

“I am so humbled and appreciative of the support and thank them for treating me like Hollywood royalty.”

Fans of the pop starlet will undoubtedly remember her appearance representing Britain in the Eurovision song contest, an experience which she still has fond memories of, including that she wore a dress custom-made by Paco Rabanne that Cher turned down, and was followed like a puppy dog by that year’s Greek entry.

“Top of The Pops came out to film me on a barge, wearing practically a negligee, in 10 below zero. I nearly died of hyperthermia,” she said.

Gina G still tunes in to the contest, despite it not being broadcast in America. She watched this year’s contest via YouTube.

“Azerbaijan had a pretty ballad. While ballads don’t rock my world, the performance and stage production did. If only it had been like that when I did it, I might have won,” she said.

info: Gina G will perform at the JOY 94.9 radiothon at Red Bennies this Friday, June 3 from 6.30pm and at Rogue Knights on Sunday, June 12.
