Rainbow families decide

Rainbow Families Council Victoria will hold its annual general meeting on Sunday, September 11, 2pm at the Clyde Street Community Hall, Thornbury.

New members are urged to come along to hear about the lobby group’s work and to help with the ongoing campaign for adoption rights.

Rainbow Families Council co-convenor Brian Barry said same-sex adoption will again be a key focus for the group during the next year.

“Adoption was left out of the Victorian Assisted Reproductive Treatment Act 2008 — despite recommendations by the Victorian Law Reform Commission that it should be included,” he said.

“It is … unfinished business of the Love Makes a Family campaign.”

An election will be held to vote for a new committee at the AGM and a new Rainbow Families website will be launched.

La Trobe University researcher Jen Power is the guest speaker and she will discuss her study of the experiences of same-sex parented families, Work, Love, Play: Understanding resilience in same-sex parented families.

Light refreshments will be provided and Sparkle the Rainbow Fairy will entertain children.
The group is currently working on developing a rainbow families resource for primary schools, similar to its posters and fact sheets for children of kindergarten age, thanks to a grant from Hobsons Bay Council and the Gay and Lesbian Organisation for Business Enterprise.
