Remembrance day for trans people

Transgender people from around the world will be honoured in events across Australia for this year’s Transgender Day of Remembrance.

In Sydney on Tuesday, November 20, City of Sydney Deputy Lord Mayor Robyn Kemmis will launch the Transgender Anti-Violence Report at a special ceremony at the Macquarie Room, NSW Parliament House from 10am-noon.

In Melbourne, Hares and Hyenas bookstore, Fitzroy is hosting an International Trans Day of Remembrance event as part of its regular Bespoken queer writing night on November 22 from 7.45pm.

In Brisbane, Many Genders One Voice, the Healthy Communities trans and gender diverse group will be holding an event to celebrate the lives of trans people on Saturday, November 24 at their Teneriffe headquarters from 6pm.

The day began in San Francisco, US in 1999 to honour Rita Hester who was murdered on November 28, 1998.
