A different kind of Swingers club

A newer addition to Sydney’s gay and lesbian sporting scene, the Sydney Swingers Golf Club has around 30 members, a number that’s growing each month as new golfers join the fold.

A member of Team Sydney, the club will be a part of the 2011 Mardi Gras Sports Festival, with more 50 players expected to compete for a number of prizes.

“We’re a fun social group of gay and lesbian golfers of all ages and skill levels. Some of us take it fairly seriously and others just enjoy a nice walk around the course and a casual game of golf,” core Swingers member Nick told Sydney Star Observer.

“If you’re new to golf, this is the perfect group for you to join. If you’re a serious player, you’ll fit in too. We’ll soon be making the group a bit more formal, with regular Stableford competitions with prizes and awards.”

The Swingers play on the second Sunday of each month at different courses in the Sydney area, with an average of 10 at each weekend.

This year, the courses on their list include Glenmore Heritage Park, Wakehurst, Beverley Park and Bexley. Green fees are approximately $30-$40, but there is no membership fee to be a part of the group. If you can’t get along to a Sunday game, get in touch with the club — a number of members hold occasional mid-week games.

Nick said the social, gay and lesbian atmosphere at Sydney Swingers was important to all members, both novice and experienced.

“We come from a wide variety of backgrounds, and four hours out on the course not only lets you practice your golf, it also lets you have a good chat and make new friends. We always have a drink in the bar after the round, and as the group gets bigger we’ll be organising dinners and other events,” he said.

“About 10 of us are heading to the Hunter Valley in December for a long weekend of golf … and drinking wine of course!”
