QueerDoc will once again feature as part of the Marrickville Council’s Cultural Festival, which will be taking place on the streets of the inner west in September.

Catering to queer film supporters and cinema fans alike, 2008’s program will be taking audiences on an international journey across every continent, bar Antarctica, though even that will be conquered by next Mardi Gras, festival director Lex Lindsay said.

Thanks to a $4,000 grant through Marrickville Council’s Cultural Grants scheme, QueerDoc will be providing filmgoers with an unprecedented cinematic journey this year.

It’s really great the way the council has supported us. We made the decision back in 2006 to shift QueerDoc to being based on King St. We’d recognised that we had a really growing audience around Newtown and from that the queer community of the inner west and the Marrickville Local Council were really keen to get more involved with our event and said that we should put some more events in their neck of the woods, Lindsay said.

This year the focus is on taking audiences on a round-the-world trip. There are a number of films about people from one culture being in a different culture -” so it’s that fish out of water kind of story.

We’re doing our absolute best to cover every continent. We’re not quite going to get Antarctica -” Antarctica’s showing at the Mardi Gras film festival instead. But we’re getting something from every other continent.

The Marrickville Cultural Festival will take place all through September, with a number of fashion, food and film events planned. The official dates and times for events will be announced in August.
