Convicts launch World Cup video

web-convictsGay rugby club the Sydney Convicts have stepped up their efforts ahead of hosting the Bingham Gay Rugby World Cup with the release of a promotional video showing the team in action and selling Sydney as a gay-friendly destination.

The video, which was launched at the Kinselas Hotel in Darlinghurst on Saturday, was shot to invite gay rugby clubs from around the world to Sydney for the 2014 Bingham Cup, the world’s largest gay rugby tournament.

The video’s release comes after six Convicts delegates returned from Europe having premiered the video at the closing night of Europe’s largest gay rugby tournament, the Union Cup, to raise awareness of the upcoming Sydney tournament.

Bingham Cup Organising Committee Chair Andrew Purchas said that the video has proven a “hit” with local supporters.

“Everybody loved it, and more importantly it has really inspired people from overseas to make the effort to come to Sydney and start fundraising now. Many teams have already started and our goal is to make this the most affordable Bingham Cup to ever attend, to ensure cost is not a barrier to people coming to Australia,” Purchas said.

The 2014 tournament will be the first Bingham Cup to include a separate competition for female competitors. Organisers expect between six and eight female teams to compete alongside the 30 to 40 male teams.
