Gays and lesbians take the plunge

Recreational springboard and platform diving club Diving Masters is fast attracting a cult following in the GLBT community.
After competing in last month’s World Masters Games, the club will continue its training for the Gay Games in 2010.
“Since Matthew Mitcham won gold at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, diving has become a high profile sport and has seen a growing interest. His achievement has inspired many people, both novice and ex-divers, to try or return to the sport,” Diving Masters spokesman Stephen Shaw said.
“We had quite a few gay and lesbian participants enter diving in 2009 World Masters Games from all over the globe. Many of us were able to win medals, which is a great achievement.”
The club is hoping to have diving included as one of the core sports in the 2nd Asia Pacific OutGames in Wellington in 2011.
Diving Masters is designed to introduce adult novices to the enjoyment of the sport of diving in a fun and safe environment.
“It’s great to part to a group of people who motivate, encourage and congratulate each other when we achieve our goals,” Shaw said.
“We’re hoping to grow the club and continue our success at state, national and international competitions.”
