Fit for kings and queens

The third annual Kings Cross Food and Wine Festival returns to Fitzroy Gardens this Sunday 6 May from 11am for a day of delights and indulgence.

Former Kings Cross restaurateur and AIDS Trust Food and Wine alumnus Claire de Lune (pictured) will also return to host the event, interview chefs and announce the winners of a public poll for the best establishments in the area.

De Lune said she relishes these festivals because food fashion changes all the time. You always need to research new food items, it’s quite exciting.

In addition to eating and drinking, De Lune talked up the entertainment including a full mandolin orchestra and tango dangers. And it wouldn’t be Kings Cross without exotic pole dancers, and a male belly dancer Shiva for the boys, she said.

It’s more bohemian than other festivals; you have amazing mixture of people in Kings Cross, from the crazy artists, to the people working in the erotic industry, to mums and dads and the grandmother who’s been living there since the 20s – all of these people eating and drinking together outside in the beautiful park.

Changes this year include ensuring that the festival stays green with biodegradable materials.

About 10 years ago Kings Cross lost a bit of its identity, but it’s smarter and safer now, so you can see more people living around the area now, she said.
