Golden queens wait for balls to drop

Bingo is never going to be the same again for hundreds of gay and lesbian senior citizens when Sydney’s leading drag queen lets her balls drop at a truly fabulous event for Seniors Week.

Big Senior Bingay is an outrageous and madcap version of bingo that’s part of the official program of events for NSW’s 2009 Seniors Week.

The event is being produced and presented by ACON, the leading health promotion agency for NSW’s gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender (GLBT) community, and the Department of Ageing, Disability and Home Care.

The free event will be hosted by the hilarious drag diva Mitzi Macintosh and her all-singing barrel girl, Naomi Palmer.

Big Senior Bingay will include three hours of games with weird rules, sing-a-longs and penalties plus a steady stream of delectable cakes, biscuits and savoury snacks.

ACON CEO Stevie Clayton said the event acknowledges and celebrates the diversity of NSW’s senior citizenry.

NSW has a significant older GLBT population, she said. In fact, about 35,000 people in NSW over the age of 55 identify as gay or lesbian.

They play a vital and valued role in our community and we’re delighted to be partnering with DADHC to provide this wonderful opportunity for the more mature members of our community to get together and have a good time.

However, Big Senior Bingay is not just for our golden queers. Anyone is welcome to come along and join in the fun -“ old, young, gay or straight, we don’t discriminate.

It’s great that the organisers are recognising the GLBT community in this year’s Senior’s Week celebrations and we look forward to working more closely with a range of government and community organisations to help provide more opportunities for older gay men and lesbians in NSW.

info: Big Senior Bingay is on Wednesday 18 March at Paddington RSL, 220-“232 Oxford St, Paddington, from 3pm. Bookings: 9206 2024 or [email protected]

  2. Go for it Mitzi!!! … Thanks for all you’ve done for all the people in our diverse communities. Stevie Clayton has always supported diversity and individual difference in our communities. Obviously there have been and are many others who contribute and have contributed to the campaigns for social justice and equal rights. Our fights are not over, the campaigns have not achieved all our objectives. We are better off for having people like Mitzi and Stevie championing our causes.
