Rallying for our rights

Rallying for our rights

A large queer contingent is expected to assemble at Sydney Town Hall for CAAH’s (Community Action Against Homophobia) rally for marriage equality on Saturday, May 15. The rally will coincide with this year’s International Day Against Homophobia, held two days later on May 17.

CAAH’s last rally, in March, attracted a crowd of more than 500 people, with speakers including gender activist norrie mAy-welby and Greens MLC Lee Rhiannon and messages of support from celebrities including Dannii Minogue. With drag queen and political activist Vanessa Wagner tipped to host the May 15 event, it’s hoped the rally will boast a similarly strong turnout.

  1. @ Oliver: “Have you all considered its not easy being in a relationship with a member of the same sex. A lot of Gay men can be selfish and demanding in relationships.”

Oliver, as someone who has been in a relationship for 11 years I find your comment both naive and offensive.

All relationships – no matter the gender of the people involved – have their difficulties and all people can be selfish and demanding.

The key to a good relationship – again regardless of gender – is communication.

I think what is clear from your comment though is that you are difficult to be in a relationship with because you obviously have difficulty seeing anything outside your own narrow-minded world, and that makes communicating with you on any intelligible level next to impossible.

  2. Some of these rallies are just Uni students on an ego trip who have no idea what life is and still live with their parents.

  3. Um to all the above, we are actually Humans, and not segregated into “Groups” Sub culture has made it difficult for all. Why on earth in 2010 are people fighting for marriage? Its such an old fashioned institution! Paul, yes sure the marriage act is stuck in 1961 because thats where marriage was shoved in our faces. Has anybody considered the impact of “Divorce” ?? In the UK equal number of Gay marriages have now resulted in divorce! Have you all considered its not easy being in a relationship with a member of the same sex. A lot of Gay men can be selfish and demanding in relationships.

  4. I agree with John. I certainly support the rally but I would prefer to be labelled gay. Queer is how you feel after a night on the tiles with a stop off at the kebab shop.

  5. It’s not only a queer and straight friends gathering, there will be gay men and lesbians there too…

  6. The Marriage Act 1961 – is actually stuck in 1961 mind you!!!!!

  7. Its not only a queer gathering. I have many straight friends who will be attending this time to show their support for gay marriage.
