Skinner to speak at AIDS memorial
NSW Health Minister Jillian Skinner will be the guest speaker at the Sydney Candlelight Memorial, on International Candlelight Memorial Day on Sunday, May 20.
The hour-long event, organised by ACON and Positive Life NSW, will be held at Slide, 41 Oxford St from 3.30pm.
ACON CEO Nicolas Parkhill said attendees at last year’s event noted that moving it from World AIDS Day to International Candlelight Memorial Day had added to its significance.
“Moving Sydney’s memorial event to coincide with similar events in Australia and around the world has allowed us to become part of a global day of remembrance for the partners, family, and friends we have lost to HIV/AIDS,” he said.
“World AIDS Day has become a day full of many events related to HIV/AIDS and shifting Candlelight to May has given our community in Sydney a better opportunity to focus on this important occasion for reflection and remembrance,” Positive Life NSW CEO Sonny Williams said.
The names of lost loved ones will be read out at the ceremony.

Support the Star Observer… while you still can
LGBTQIA+ media is under threat. Queer content is censored by tech conglomerates who amplify bigotry and push out AI slop — so we receive less financial support than ever.
When our community is muzzled and intolerance intensifies, we need queer media more than ever. Your donation means we can continue paying queer journalists to write queer news.
Don’t rely on the straight lies of big tech – support Star Observer instead and donate now.
