Taylor Square a -˜war zone’

Taylor Square a -˜war zone’

A group of residents fed up with the brawling, urinating and smashed bottles at Taylor Square are demanding Clover Moore shut down the T2 and the Taylor Square Hotel for good.

Members of the Nichols Street Community Group claimed three ambulances were needed following violence on Sunday morning.

Once again this Sunday morning from 6am onwards the southern end of Taylor Square has been like a war zone, e.g. fights, one resident calling himself Fred wrote to Moore.

When is this hellhole going to be closed? We are victims of neglect from council and state government. You have just been re-elected as Lord Mayor, please do something about T2 and the whole sorry state of Taylor Square.

However, Surry Hills Police denied the violence over the weekend was more serious than usual.
A 26-year-old man was charged following a physical altercation at the Square in which a 32-year-old alleged victim sustained minor facial injuries. It wasn’t as serious as claimed, a spokesman said, but there was a crowd of onlookers at the time of the incident.

Prior to the incident large numbers of police were seen patrolling Oxford St and the Square throughout the weekend.

The Taylor Square residents group also wrote to Moore saying public safety was in danger.

We are grateful for the presence of additional law enforcement resources but it begs the question whether this abominable behaviour should be controlled through funding by tax payers in this manner, the unsigned letter stated.

Another resident calling himself Brian suggested improvements to laneways could help the area’s amenity.

Little Oxford St needs to be changed by Sydney Council’s -˜Live Laneways’ artworks project, he wrote.

Right now it’s the dumping ground for Oxford St’s bars, clubs and cafes’ foul-smelling rubbish matter, with green garbage bags overflowing from the many stinking, multicoloured wheelie bins. It’s a back lane waiting to be transformed.

Taylor Square Hotel was contacted for comment, but did not respond by print deadline.

  1. Mark Ive also lived through that Warzone myself! Kirribilli is a much better, safer area!! The view from my window is the lovely Neutral Bay Inlet. So safe to walk around at night and such a diverse community. Its not just Kevin Rudd that resides here as mant Eastern Suburbians think.

  2. Taylor-Square has always been a scumbag area on a Sunday morning, with the outer suburb tourists stumbling around still on party drugs or drunk, then add a few low-lifes bludging for cancer-sticks and Vola,taylor-square the place where no parent with children or elderly pensioner wants to tread ever let alone be seen(Think about it,you never see old people or children around darlinghurst)
I lived there (across from the greek church)And for my hard earned money to pay the unbeliable high rent I was rewarded with visual entertainment of drunken fights, thieves, junkies & your average bum (that seem to be nocternal) from my 6th floor balcony, every day.
Oxford street will always be shit, and no one gives a shit for the average resident thats why faboulous,Leafy & Alive “Newtown” is the New place to live and be seen, thanks

  3. I agree with Darren – the same can be said for all the lovely residents who want to shut down the imperial for good. HELLO??

  4. Yeah, that’s just what they need, more people living around and using Taylor Square. Umm I think not! If you don’t like it move. It has been the same for years. People move in thinking how nice it would be to live so close to the city and Oxford St but then turn around and complain about the noise. You can’t move in knowing what an area is like and then whinge because you don’t like it. I don’t hear any one complaining when they’re the ones out drinking and making noise. Give it a break. It’s simple, you know it’s a busy area and it’s not going to change. So just move.

  5. With Sydney having a rental crisis, Apartment blocks can be built. Get rid of that grass area and pointless water squirting thing and make way for modern apartments!!

  6. Yes, Taylor Square is a war zone – a total disaster .. but council may not be the answer.
We need to work toether to reclaim the space. Turn it into a community area … a Saturday and Sunday market ..
Make it a place drunks won’t want to be seen..
Just an idea … but one that might work .. and one that hasn’t been tried before
