The Country Awareness Network Victoria (CAN) 2010 Community Partnership Awards were formally presented at CAN’s annual general meeting on Sunday, October 10.

Big business, research centres, community organisations and individuals were all recognised for their commitment to rural health.

Recipients included the University of Melbourne Centre for Excellence in Rural Sexual Health (CERSH) and Telstra, who was acknowledged for their Bill Assistance program, which allowed dozens of CAN members/clients to remain connected to the community.

Local Bendigo GLBTI radio show, Rainbow Radio won CAN’s media community partnership award; Bendigo and District Aboriginal Co-Operative was awarded best community partner; Paul Cosgrave and Greg Carter won the volunteer award for their involvement in Rural Momentum  health workshops; and Jeffrey Robertson was honoured with a life-time membership award.

CAN initiated its annual Community Partnership Awards in 2006 as a public acknowledgement of those that contributed significantly towards their work of informing, educating, supporting and empowering rural/regional communities of Victoria affected by HIV, hepatitis C and other blood-borne viruses and sexually transmissible infections.

Keynote speaker at the AGM was Sue Hackney from the WayOut Project. This was the first opportunity Hackney had to speak publicly about the organisation’s victory over the Christian Brethern-operated Christian Youth Camps.
