Peel St fair given green light

Yarra Council has officially approved a one-day Pride street party in Peel St, Collingwood along with offering $30,000 to help fund running costs.

The decision for the Peel Street Pride Fair to go ahead this December was made at a council meeting last week. A date has yet to be confrimed.

Yarra Council Mayor Jane Garrett said the fair day was an opportunity to add some colour to the neighbourhood.
“Black and white might be the shades most people associate with Collingwood but the area has always been more colourful than that,” Garrett said.

“These kinds of events are not only a special celebration for the GLBITQ community but they are also a fun way to show people that together we support greater understanding and acceptance of everyone living in Yarra.”

Last month, Pride March Victoria president Brett Hayhoe told Southern Star Observer the event would be a family-friendly, all-of-community day.

The day is set to feature stalls, stage shows and show rides.

Yarra Council said most residents along and around Peel St were supportive of the event, after the council wrote to residents in August seeking feedback.

The Pride Fair will raise money for Pride March Victoria, which will still hold its annual St Kilda march early next year.
