Rice should ‘get educated’

ALSO Foundation CEO Crusader Hillis has called on Olympic swimmer Stephanie Rice to undertake diversity training after she posted homophobic comments on her Twitter account over the weekend.

“In a similar way someone needs to do an anger management course, I think Rice needs to go and do a diversity training course,” Hillis said.

“I see these things as a way of education rather than a way of punishment.”

Rice came under fire for tweeting offensive remarks after Australian rugby team the Wallabies beat the South African Springboks by two points on Saturday.

“Suck on that faggots,” she wrote. “Probably the best game I’ve ever seen!! Well done boys.”

The comments were later deleted and Rice apologised. Luxury car brand Jaguar dumped Rice following her Twitter remarks.

One response to “Rice should ‘get educated’”

  1. Stephanie Rice has apologised, publically, in tears, AFTER loss of one of her sponsors as a direct consequence of her actions. One wonders what the tears were for, compasion or sorrow at the loss of income.

Two other people should be single out in this Stephanie Rice story. Firstly, Ian Roberts an out and proud sportsperson once again at the front line of the fight against homophobia. Well done to him. The second who should be noted for an opposite response is Daniel Kowalski, who became an instant gay icon and spoke out against Jason Akermanis (as did Ian Roberts). However, when it came to a fellow swimmer, Daniel Kowalski ran back to the closet, not a word. Guess we can only count on him when it’s an award night or an easy enemy.
