Police rabbi keeps job despite comments

The official rabbi for Canada’s York Regional Police Force will keep his job after an internal investigation determined that homophobic comments he made were not actionable because they were scripturally framed.

Rabbi Mendel Kaplan gave the sermon after Kulanu Toronto, a gay Jewish group, took out a full-page ad in a newspaper calling on supporters to march with them after a group called Queers Against Israeli Apartheid was given permission to march in the 2010 Toronto Pride parade.

Kulanu learned of the sermon, in which Kaplan called homosexuality an abomination to God and told congregants it was unconscionable to support Kulanu or the parade, and lodged a complaint with police.

A York Police diversity officer told Xtra! newspaper they had examined the issue from a “purely religious perspective”.

“Experts agreed that the content was technically correct,” the officer said.
