Women’s cricket back to bat

Cricket season is starting again and clubs in Melbourne’s north are looking for female players.

Currently in pre-season training, the Dennis Cricket Club’s women’s team is looking for new members.

“We’re really looking forward to the 2011/2012 season and urge women of all ages and skills to join in,” women’s club president and junior development officer Angela Forrester said.

“It doesn’t matter if you’ve never played cricket before or may have played years ago, our coaches are happy to train new members and prepare them to get on the field this season.

“We can also help out with gear and equipment”

One of the oldest in the Victorian Women’s Cricket Association, the club has been around for more than 76 years.

Formerly Clifton Hill/Collingwood Cricket Club, the Dennis women’s team recently joined the men’s Dennis Cricket Club, which counts AFL great Norm Smith as one of its founding members.

Dennis Cricket Club has a membership of more than 60 men, 15 women and 100 junior boys and girls.

The club is in a rebuilding phase, having made various finals in recent years.

Forrester said while the team is competitive on the field, participation is the key.

“We have a lot of fun on the ground. The main thing is getting out there and having a go,” she said.

“We also have a lot of fun off the field with social events throughout the season and there’s a great camaraderie in the group.”

The club’s home ground is McDonnell Park, Northcote.

The 2011/12 women’s cricket season starts in early October and training is on Tuesday and Thursday nights.
