Scratching a queer film itch to support the LGBTI community

FILM buffs will be able to get their queer cinema fix and support the community over the next month with Queer Springtime at Cinema Nova.

The Victorian Gay and Lesbian Rights Lobby has teamed up with a number of local LGBTI community organisations to raise money with screenings of some of this year’s most critically acclaimed queer films.

Tonight at 7pm a screening of The Skeleton Twins will raise funds for the VGLRL and JOY 94.9 with the story of twins Maggie and Milo, played by Saturday Night Live‘s Kristen Wiig and Bill Hader, reconnecting after a decade apart.

The quiet and moving comedy-drama won a screenwriting Waldo Salt screenwriting award at the 2014 Sundance Film Festival.

On Thursday, October 2, The Case Against 8 will support the VGLRL and Australian Marriage Equality. Another Sundance award-winning film, the documentary follows the campaign and legal battle to overturn California’s Proposition 8, which banned same-sex marriage in the state.

Finally, on October 23 a screening of British film Pride will raise money for the VGLRL and the Melbourne Queer Film Festival.

Pride is set in Thatcher’s England in 1984, following a group of queer activists who raised money for families affected by the miners’ strike. The film won the Queer Palm award at Cannes this year.
