ACL rejects marriage timetable

The Australian Christian Lobby (ACL) has demanded the Gillard Government not bow to the Greens’ stated priority for the Marriage Act to be changed before the next federal election.

“There’s still a long way to go in this debate,” ACL chief of staff Lyle Shelton (pictured) said.

It came in response to Greens’ claims that same-sex marriage was “unstoppable”.

“At last year’s Federal election Australians voted for two major parties promising to retain marriage between one man and one woman,” Shelton said.

“If Labor’s national conference in December votes to change the party’s platform to redefine marriage, it would be a breach of faith with the electorate if the Government allowed a change to the Marriage Act without first taking such a proposal to an election.”

Shelton said it was wrong of the Greens to compare the vote in the New York Senate to the Australian situation.

“In New York, unlike Australia, same-sex couples did not have equality under the law,” he said, referring to the 2008 amendment of 84 laws giving same-sex couples identical rights as de-facto heterosexual couples.

  1. Bring it on I say – make gay marriage a referendum at the ACL’s request – we know that acceptance for gay marriage polls better than ANY of the political parties, and it polls better than church attendance nationally. The gay gene works its way across the political spectrum, as we have seen in New York. It even pops up amongst christians … that’s what scares them! Get used to it ACL – you’re on the outer.

  2. Once upon a time, in the deep north of darkest Queensland, and in the very Buckle-Of-The-Bible-Belt, there was an underground movement of had-enough/fed-up, frail, elderly sick Gay citizens, and some young ones also. A desperate time of brutal, religious persecution against a minority, who were just a bit different from the accepted norm. It was just before the 1989 Queensland State Elections. There was talk, a growing and grumbling of, “taking up arms against their detractors”. The very corrupt National Party and their Christian- Crazy, lobbyist whips, were persecuting Gay citizens wholesale. In the Cattle town of Roma, Queensland, Gay loving, cowboy couples were being arrested and frogmarched into the civil courts, just for loving each other, living together and possessing Gay magazines.
One prominent and outraged Gay activist, now deceased, told us that, “he wouldn’t mind leaping off the balcony of the visitors gallery at Parliament House, packed with explosives right in the middle of those National Party bastards”.

This is a snippet of unknown Gay history from Queensland.

  3. The clock is ticking and the real panic for the ACL is that theyll have 2 find a new enemy to run n2 the ground. Gay Marriage will mean an end to offensive arcane band-aid laws that create sexual aparteid btw gay and straight relationships. Its very scarey for christian groups to realise the legitimacy of other ppl’s rights that they despise and to no longer have any power over them. And as 4 the ‘ol fashioned red-head who beleives her traditional upbringing should be foisted on an entire nation, BIG DISSAPOINTMENT! She’ll b gone by Xmas. Good riddance to bad rubbish!

  4. A breach of faith like the carbon tax? At least there is a precedent.

It’s a good thing we don’t require the ACL’s approval.

  5. Im sick of people who made the lifestyle choice of becoming a christian shoving their ugly beliefs in my face.

  6. Gillard and Federal Labor can join the suicide pact with the tiny cult the Australian Christian Lobby, and the 20 followers, or she can live a long life politically, and flee the cult their extremist ideas as most Christians have.
