Anna Bligh says ‘It Gets Better’

Queensland Premier Anna Bligh has added her voice to the online anti-bullying campaign It Gets Better with her own YouTube video.

“I have a message for young Australians, it doesn’t matter who you are, whether you are gay or straight, you are not alone, and it’s important to reach out and talk to someone about how you’re feeling,” Bligh says in the online message.

“Whatever you’re going through, you don’t have to do it on your own, reach out.”

  1. I reached out to Ms Bligh for help, she gave none.If you are going to publish this womans re election catch phrases, please talk to those of us that have experianced homophobia in this sunshine state

  2. It is just such a shame Gillard does even include GLBTI people as human, and excludes them from the Federal Equal Opportunity Act. You would that that would be easy, and marriage would be hard, let alone no national adoption laws, or consent laws.

I guess I will just have to continue voting Green while Labor and Liberal, let alone the throffing mouth of the National Party, seeks to make the birth of GLBTI people a punishment.

  3. Premier Anna Bligh is so blatantly hypocritical in regard to her Government’s treatment of same sex attracted youth. She knows they are at increased risk of suicide compared to straight youth, and yet she refuses to allow Queensland’s same sex attracted youth the dignity and protection inherent in there being an equal age of consent for them on par with their peers.

Everywhere else in Australia the age of consent applies equally to all youth for all activities. Queensland’s Criminal Code actively discriminates directly against against same sex attracted male youths aged 16 and 17, defining them as likely criminals, by making it a severe crime for any person aged under 18 to be engaged in anal intercourse. A maximum 14 year jail term applies, and the Courts do not accept “consent” as a defense.

Premier Bligh knows full well that Queensland Labor’s official Policy Platform (Section 7.9 of the Justice and Governance Chapter) has, since at least 2008, been: “7.9 Labor will ensure uniformity of age among laws relating to the age of consent for lawful sexual activity;”

The current law validates any bully who wants to harass same sex attracted youth.

Surely the Premier can see the clear logic that enacting a truly equal age of consent is an absolutely necessary step in enabling equal protection and support for all youth, for enhancing their self-esteem, and for minimising the risk of self harm as well as for minimising harm being inflicted upon them.

  4. It’ll get better in Queensland when same-sex adoption rights, as we have here in NSW, were granted.
