BRISBANE’S primary gay nightclub district Brunswick Street Mall is about to undergo major renovations in an effort to breathe new life into the precinct that has been criticised as neglected, unsafe and outdated.

News was announced last year that Brisbane Council approved a $4 million face-lift to the strip in order to revitalise the local daytime economy and to also make it a “key creative and entertainment location” for Fortitude Valley and Brisbane as a whole.

“This the first of a broader economic strategy we are investing in, led by the local traders, to see Fortitude Valley as the creative industry and entertainment hub of Brisbane.” said Cr Vicki Howard, who worked with businesses on this proposal.

Removal of existing pavements will commence this month, with further renovation over the next six months.

Work to the Brunswick Street Mall coincides with renovations planned for iconic gay venue the Wickham Hotel. There are also unconfirmed reports that the Sportsman Hotel at Spring Hill is also set for major renovations soon.

Construction company JMac will commence renovation work on Brunswick Street Mall on January 20.
