Canada: Muslims choose Catholic schools

Canada: Muslims choose Catholic schools

Canadian Muslim families are opting to send their children to state-funded Catholic schools rather than have them exposed to sex education and gay-straight alliance clubs in the public school system.

In Ontario province, Catholic schools are the only religious schools that receive state funding. Due to declining enrolments from Catholics, in many schools 10 percent of students are non-Catholic.

Parent Seid Oumer told The Globe and Mail newspaper he was grateful that his children would attend a school with a conservative worldview on reproductive biology, sex education and same-sex relations.

  1. Catholic Schools are for everybody,My best friend is a Muslim in Dallas,Texas,USA and he went to a Catholic School(a Private one),they’re quite expensive but they’re better than public schools.

  2. as far as im concerned, a catholic school is for those that identify as catholic. I remember years and years ago when our teacher said put your hand up if you are a catholic, and only two of us put up our hand and were laughed at. Yes the rest of the seats in the class that were filled by protestants, orthodox, athiest etc.. who dont take catholicism seriously, only there because the parents want them educated under the umbrella term, “private school”

  3. Not many Muslims attend Catholic schools in Ontario. The Catholic schools just hold up the examples they do have as “proof” they are not an enclave of relatively homongeneous Christian whiteness. Only 6 to 7% of most Ontario Catholic school boards are non-Catholic, a far cry from the 66% of the Ontario population that is non-Catholic.

There is a movement in Canada, Ontario in particular, to defund publicly funded Catholic schools (www.OneSchoolSystem.org). Most Ontarians would prefer there be no public funding for religious schools at all.
