TEMPLE-Beth-Israel at St Kilda will host the first-ever LGBTI pride event held in a Victorian synagogue later this month to coincide with Midsumma.

The event is a collaboration between the synagogue and Keshet, a national organisation founded to educate the Jewish community about LGBTI Jewish people, and is set to honour key community members.

Among those receiving awards are Transgender Victoria Executive Director Sally Goldner, and gay couple Kristen Adriaan and Ilana Gelbart, who celebrated Victoria’s first Jewish same- sex commitment ceremony at Temple Beth-Israel last year.

Keshet Pesident Jonathan Barnett told the Star Observer the diversity of the award recipients reflected the breadth of support for LGBTI people in the Jewish community.

“I’m so excited that of the four people and one couple we’re honouring,” he said.

Barnett said events like this were vital to helping the Jewish community embrace its LGBTI members.

Pride Shabbat will take place at 6.15pm on January 31 at Temple Beth-Israel, 76– 82 Alma Rd, St Kilda.
