Gallantry’s Favourite Son – Scott Matthew
This Australian-born beardy queer singer-songwriter is still something of an unknown on our shores, thanks in no small part to the fact he nicked off to his spiritual home of New York in the early part of this century (that’s Matthew you’ll see mour
nfully singing in pivotal points of John Cameron Mitchell’s 2006 sex romp Shortbus). It’s a shame, because his music — aptly described as ‘tragically beautiful’ — deserves a wider audience.
On this, his third solo album, Matthew lays out a collection of bruised torch songs that would fit nicely alongside the Antony and the Johnsons albums in your collection. Throughout, that hushed, haunting voice manages to make even otherwise joyous songs like The Wonder Of Falling In Love sound positively heartbreaking.
