With the A-League football season poised to start next weekend, SLAGS (the Sydney Football Club lesbian and gay supporters group) are looking forward to a season of gripping matches and camaraderie, with their highest number of participants ever.

Following an call for interest earlier this year, SLAGS have managed to boost their numbers to a point where they can now buy group season tickets that seat them together.

Group organiser Jonny Bastin said the group is pleased with its ever-growing size, but is still looking to raise awareness about the number of football fans in the community, and provide a way for them to support their team in a GLBT-friendly environment.

We had a good response to the offer for members seating that we publicised earlier in the year, which means for the first time there will be 13 gay and lesbian soccer fans seated together at every home game at the Sydney Football Stadium, Bastin said.

We’re still trying to raise awareness though, for people who might want to join in and get involved. We would ultimately like to establish a social network for gay supporters of all the A-League clubs.

In the meantime Bastin encourages anyone who would like to meet up with some other GLBT soccer fans, to come along to a pre-match drink with the group at the Oxford Hotel at 5pm on Saturday before heading off to watch Sydney take on their rivals Melbourne Victory.

  1. How great that Sydney FC has SLAGS!!!

How do you cope with the occasionally homophobic~ish shout/chant from some people in the crowd? I must apologize for these, I don’t think anyone really means what they are shouting.
