Homophobic, racist attack on QLD MP

The office of Queensland Labor MP Curtis Pitt was last night attacked by vandals, who scrawled homophobic and racist graffiti on its street frontage just a day after wide-spread outrage at an anti-gay marriage advertisment put out by federal MP Bob Katter’s Australian Party.

Pitt tweeted photos of the damage this morning, which included the spray-painting of “Communist Gay, Communist N…- loving party” on the windows of his Far North Queensland electorate office in Gordonvale.

Pitt has previously been the target of hate mail after the Bligh Government passed same-sex civil union legislation.

The minister for disability services, mental health and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander partnerships, is also married to an Indigenous Australian woman.

“This is the cowardly overnight attack on my office in Gordonvale. Utterly disgraceful,” Pitt wrote on his official Twitter account.

“There is NO place in Australian politics for this kind of bigotry or intolerance.”

Premier Anna Bligh also condemned the incident today, telling reporters that Queenslanders would be disturbed by the attack.

“Curtis is very offended by this material and particularly so because Curtis is married to a very proud Indigenous woman,” she said.

“It is disturbing to see some of the language and some of the hateful comments that we’re starting to see about some groups in our community.”

Opposition Leader Campbell Newman went further, suggesting the defacing of Pitt’s electoral office may have been sparked by the controversial anti-gay election advertisement by Katter’s Australian Party.

  1. I bet she didnt think she would be caught out. What a fool. Its pretty obvious that there are still alot of bigots in this country.

  2. It goes to show that homophobia in regional communities is a serious.

Yet they eventually ‘go with the flow’ on such issues. After all, back in the 60s there were far more public places in the country where Aboriginals weren’t allowed to go than in the city. Of course they didn’t like it yet they eventually went with the flow. That is what’ll happen on equal rights for gays and lesbians in legal areas, they won’t like it but they’ll have to go with the flow because we are a progressive country.

  3. I have emailed the ABC as to why they are employing a person to do political ads which are both homophobic and bigoted! Why are my taxpayer dollars paying the wages of such a creature as Suzanne McGill?
    Here she is!

I would encourage others to email the ABC and question why this women is on air?

  4. The Nazis of Queensland are on the move! A vote for Katter’s Cult or Newman’s party full of fundamentalist Christians is a vote for the removal of individual rights, is anti-democratic and a vote towards a theocracy!
