Brazilian students wear skirts to support trans* classmate

STUDENTS at a Brazilian high school have banded together to wear skirts for a day, as a show of support for a fellow trans* student who was fined by teachers for wearing a skirt.

At Rio de Janiero’s Pedro II School, 17-year-old Maria Muniz was not only fined but also forced to wear trousers.

Her classmates, both male and female, then decided to defy school authorities by turning up to school all dressed in skirts.

Images of the protest (pictured above) was posted on social media earlier this week and has since gone viral, forcing school to backtrack their decision and the principal to consider relaxing the school uniform rules.

Speaking with the media, Muniz said: “I always turned up in trousers but I felt repressed and for me wearing a skirt was about expressing my freedom over who I am inside and not how society sees me.

“I am really happy about the way my classmates supported me and I hope it serves as an example to others to feel encouraged to do the right thing. I was always taught at school to accept who you are, I am only trying to live that.”
