LGBTI Round Table noms to close Friday

Queenslanders wanting to join the state’s Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Intersex (LGBTI) Round Table have until Friday February 17 before nominations close.

Community Services Minister Karen Struthers is calling on LGBTI people to nominate for the four community member positions available.

“The Bligh Government is committed to ensuring LGBTI people have a bright future in Queensland,” Struthers said.

“Being a member of the round table provides an incredible opportunity to make a difference to the lives of LGBTI people and I encourage anyone interested in a position to apply.”

Struthers said the round table was established in 2010 and has already provided valuable advice on issues affecting LGBTI communities.

“Members have identified high priority areas for Government action including stigma and discrimination, engagement with community services, and suicide and self-harm,” she said.

“The round table members have had input into the Government’s reviews of domestic violence and multicultural policy as well as give advice for the Queensland Strategy for Reducing Homelessness 2011- 2014.”

The LGBTI Round Table meets in Brisbane three times a year and conducts monthly teleconferences.

The Government covers travel costs for members who have to travel to attend the three meetings in Brisbane.

Struthers said the Bligh Government is creating a fair, cohesive and vibrant Queensland that responds to the needs of all people.

“Our strong record stands in stark contrast to the LNP who continue to demean the LGBTI community by suggesting LGBTI people can ‘grow into
heterosexuality over time’,” Struthers said, referring to Liberal National Party MP Fiona Simpson’s controversial gay reparative therapy support.

“The LGBTI community is an integral part of Queensland society and should be celebrated, not degraded.”

The round table is part of the Bligh Government’s A Fair Queensland strategy.
