Former Katter Australia Party (KAP) candidate Tess Corbett (pictured) 4482144-3x4-700x933has been found guilty of homosexual vilification after equating homosexuality with paedophilia.

Corbett, who was the KAP candidate for the Victorian seat of Wannon, made headline in January after claiming in the Hamilton Spectator newspaper that she didn’t “want gays, lesbians or paedophiles working in my kindergarten”.

“Paedophiles will be next in line to be recognised in the same way as gays and lesbians and get rights,” Corbett is on the record is saying, as well as claiming she considers gays and lesbians to be in the same category as paedophiles.

Corbett resigned as a candidate soon after her remarks triggered a backlash from prominent figures and on social media and was taken to court by LGBTI activist Garry Burns soon after.

On Tuesday the NSW Administrative Decisions Tribunal upheld Burns’ claim that Corbett’s comments incited hatred and contempt of LGBTI people and ordered Corbett to publish a prominent apology in the Sydney Morning Herald at her own expense, as well as write a letter of apology to Burns.

“For highly distressing reasons, the Australian public at the present day is being made particularly aware of the serious and long-lasting psychological damage suffered by victims of paedophilia. At any time, and especially at this time, any pronouncement that ‘brackets’ homosexual people with paedophiles is capable of urging [people] to treat homosexuals as deserving to be hated or to be regarded with serious contempt,” Tribunal deputy president Michael Chesterton said when the decision was handed down.
