Water rivalry continues

Sydney’s gay water polo club, the Sydney Stingers, is set to take on sister club, Melbourne Surge in the annual grudge.

The be held in Melbourne on Saturday, January 22, the Stingers are hoping to come away with a victory after a series of narrow losses to the Victorian team.

“The growth in our club membership and general interest in the sport of water polo over the last year has been fantastic; so much so that 2011 sees the first time two competitive matches will be held between the clubs, with the introduction of an inaugural Cup Match followed by the DT’s Trophy Match thereafter,” Stingers trophy side captain told the Star Observer.

“Despite some very close results, Surge has held the upper hand when it comes to competition between the two clubs in recent years, and coming off their silver medal at the Gay Games in Cologne last year they will certainly again be hard to beat.”

Club captain Mark Eagleson said the match would be an ideal opportunity for new Stingers.

“With more than 20 players heading to Melbourne for the weekend, it’s also an opportunity for some of our newer guys to compete against the Surge for the first time, and we’re hoping our Cup side will also do well,” he said.

“The weekend is a chance for both sides to make new friends with others in the community who share a passion for lesbian and gay aquatics.”

There’ll even be some special entertainment provided as well as a social gathering after the matches.

The Sydney Stingers, sponsored by Aussie Boys, are a competitive water polo club based in Sydney and actively recruit anyone who wants to play water polo in a fun and inclusive environment.

The team was originally formed in October 2001 to represent Sydney in the 2002 Gay Games.
