There have been some recent enquiries about Gay Asian Proud (GAP) and what is happening to the project.
GAP is a social, support and educational workshop for gay men from diverse Asian cultural backgrounds, run by the Victorian AIDS Council/Gay Men’s Health Centre.
The workshops are set up as informal social gatherings and help to promote increased social interaction between men of diverse Asian backgrounds.
Traditionally meetings are held on the second Saturday of the month. Unfortunately, due to a change in staffing, we have been unable to run this workshop over the last couple of months. We have, however, appointed someone new to the position and look forward to resuming this workshop shortly.
The workshop provides a safe space where you can explore issues in a culturally specific context.
The workshop course covers coming out, family, racism on the gay scene, love and relationships, building social networks with other men from a similar cultural background, and having fun.
It is very important to us that this workshop remains a safe space. To that end, this group is strictly limited to men from an Asian background.
Other workshops cover similar topics and do not restrict entry on the basis of cultural background.
GAP is unique in that it is less structured than other workshops and the information is given in a much more organic way. The workshops do not have a set start and finish date.
