Maxi Shield: caravan of camp

Maxi Shield: caravan of camp

For years showgirls have been packing up their curling wands and heading around the world, condensing huge amounts of luggage into a suitcase with three changes of boy’s clothes crammed into the carry-on.

I have travelled to the UK, Ireland, Singapore, and many national destinations, heels and bras buried at the bottom of the bag, trying to avoid ‘those’ questions.

Penny Tration, Tora Hymen, Dallas Della Force and Courtney Act have just come back from a whirlwind visit to Hong Kong, where Verushka Darling is often flown yearly. Candy Box, Minnie Cooper and Chelsea Bun have just returned from the Red Centre, performing for a huge company. And then there is Courtney Act’s tour of the US, which took almost six months (rumour has it she may be relocating).

The next herd of Sydney showgirls to leave the strip, just for a couple of days, is the cast of Drag. The Sydney Opera House has sold out four seasons of Drag and now the girls are heading to the Adelaide Cabaret Festival over the June long weekend and will perform at the Adelaide Festival Centre.

The creator of Drag is excited to take the girls, although Amelia Airhead is nursing a broken foot, due to a dreadful nail-painting accident, but has promised to do her best to be back in heels for the show.

The stars who will be touring are hostess with the mostest Portia Turbo with a stella cast of Australia’s drag legends — Chelsea Bun, Minnie Cooper, Joyce Maynge, Tess Tickle, Dallas Della Force. Also heading down with the girls is Les Girls living legend and my partner in crime every Wednesday at Scruffy Murphys, Ms Monique Kelly. Joining the cast are Adelaide diamonds Miss Fifi and Rochelle LaMore.

Mix in a handful of some of the sexiest boys in Australia and you have a night to remember.

Oh, also there is a budding young singer working the same nights as the girls — you may have heard of her — Olivia Newton-John. The girls will be beside themselves when they bump into Olivia back stage.

If you’re heading to Adelaide over the long weekend, go see the girls — the show is fabulous. Good luck, girls, and remember, what happens on tour, stays on tour.
