A mother’s love on stage

A new musical drama at the Seymour Centre titled The Hatpin will inspire the community with its honest and heartrending story.

Set in the Australian winter of 1892, the script is based on the true story of a single mother who advertised her baby in a newspaper trading column in the hope of saving his life.

The production is already in season but tickets are still available for the critically acclaimed production, which closes on Saturday 15 March.

Directed by Peter Rutherford and written by James Millar, it’s a showstopper, especially with gay community darling Caroline O’Connor playing the lead character.

“What I’ve learned through working on this piece in particular is the beauty of action,” actor Nick Christo said.

“The sense of pride and power in standing tall is so inspirational. Facing down adversity, being true to yourself and your beliefs, no matter what the odds, all come through.”

The story creates an awareness of the importance of the need for welfare in Australia for single mothers but also the song lyrics reveal the resilient nature of the human spirit in times of great loss.

“The Hatpin is quite a different show from what I’ve seen before,” Christo said.

“In my experience it’s the gay community which embraces and connects with the artistically unique and actually values and rewards freshness.

“I also think that the central idea of family – the one we either have or find – speaks to a community which has seen and experienced so much together. It’s a show about the love of people who stand by us and help us to create change in our world.”
