Shot with a grain of salt

On dinner tables it’s anything but inspiring, yet in the lead-up to the Mardi Gras festival it’s prompting a burst of creativity.

Salt -“ and the male form -“ is the theme of inaugural photography competition Get Salted, which opened this week at Taylor Square health and beauty centre Salt Clinic.

I just came up one night with the idea of having a photographic competition because it gives something more to the whole festival, Salt Clinic owner Grant Morrissey told Sydney Star Observer.

We went with the male form this year -¦ we’re thinking next year we may go with the female form and salt.

Get Salted features 30 works from professional and amateur photographers, including those pictured.

They’re very diverse and from all over Australia -“ we’ve got people from as far as Perth entered, Morrissey said.

Some of them have been what I would say are predictable -¦ but then there have been some images that I just think are a fantastic interpretation of it -“ something that I would not have thought to do.

Up for grabs in the photography competition are a judge-voted prize including a $12,000 home theatre system, and an audience choice award offering Salt Clinic and art supply gift vouchers.

The judge-voted winner will also have his or her work featured in Bent magazine.

Get Salted entries are on display at Salt Clinic, 371-373 Bourke St, Taylor Square, until 4 March. Entries will also appear on the Salt Clinic website, where people can vote for the public choice award.

Winners will be announced on 4 March before the Mardi Gras parade.
