Tropical Fruits get festive for New Year

By Benjamin Riley

This year’s Tropical Fruits New Year’s Festival will be held in Lismore in sub-tropical northern NSW. The four-day GLBTI event includes a New Year’s Eve fireworks display and three parties over December 31 and January 1.

A number of arts and music events including an art show and cabaret will also take place.

Running in conjunction with the festival from December 29-30 will be the Queer Fruits Film Festival, now in its fifth year. The film festival seeks to complement those run by major urban film organisations while providing opportunities for local filmmakers, and serves as a vibrant companion to the Tropical Fruits festival.

Last year’s Tropical Fruits festival was a huge financial success for both festival organisers and the town of Lismore, attracting thousands of people from Australia and overseas, many of whom stayed in the festival’s on-site camping facilities. Although many local retailers closed for the festival, those who stayed open reported large increases in sales. Lismore City Council is supportive of the event.
The Tropical Fruits New Year’s Festival will go from December 29-January 1.
