Gaga’s Born This Way – copy or tribute?

Lady Gaga released her hugely anticipated new single Born This Way last night and has already jumped to number one on iTunes in over 15 different countries including Australia.

And while there is no doubting the fame monster’s massive popularity, her new anthem has triggered a tidal wave of online debate – with many pop fans questioning its originality.

Accusations were already flying about the single cover, which bears a striking resemblance to Kylie’s 2007 number one hit 2 Hearts (see comparison below), but parallels are now being drawn between Born This Way and Madonna’s 80s classic Express Yourself.

Other people have mentioned similarities between Gaga’s new smash and Cyndi Lauper’s underground gay classic Same Ol’ Story.

There definitely is a hint of 80s Madonna – and Kylie and Cyndi – about the track but Gaga has already stated that she would be drawing on that decade for inspiration.

Is the Grammy nominated superstar still one of pop’s great pioneers or has she borrowed a little too much from those that have gone before her?

Listen to the diva’s extremely gay anthem below and decide for yourself.

  1. i love gaga but considering how much her new song was hyped, i was disappointed by born this way, the lyrics and when she sang that brief line a few months ago and all of Eltons hype, led fans to believe it would be a huge ballad/ anthem but its just a club track, which is catchy, but she can do better, i think Britneys new song is better #justsayin
