Katy Perry makes music history

Katy Perry has become the first female artist and only the second artist in history to score five #1 singles on Billboard’s Hot 100 US chart from the same album.

With her current single Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.) ascending to #1 on Billboard’s Hot 100 chart this week, the popstar now ties with Michael Jackson to become the second artist in the 53-year-history of the Hot 100 chart to produce five #1 singles off the same album. Perry is the first female, and only living artist to accomplish this feat.

The achievement follows shortly after Perry’s 2010 sophomore album Teenage Dream became the first album in the nearly 19-year history of Billboard’s Pop Songs chart to generate five #1 singles.

In Australia, Teenage Dream has surpassed triple platinum album sales, peaked at #1 and is still in the ARIA top 25 albums chart 50 weeks since its release. Teenage Dream has spawned the multi-platinum singles California Gurls , Teenage Dream, Firework, E.T. and Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.).

Currently in the middle of the US leg of the sold-out California Dreams World Tour that runs through until late November, the tour began earlier this year with stops in Europe, Australia, New Zealand and Japan.

  1. I guess I don’t get the fuss about Katy “I kissed a girl and I liked it but don’t worry boys I’m still straaaaight!!” Perry. Her music is OK but not spectacular. She’s not spectacularly talented. I think her success says more about the industry and the music-buying public. Anyway…whatever. Congrats to her.
