LGBT seniors project seeks volunteers

Healthy Communities’ new LGBT Seniors Community Visiting Service is looking for volunteers to visit one of the community’s isolated or housebound seniors.

Project worker Ann Matson said LGBT seniors were more likely to live alone and could be at risk of having smaller support networks of relatives or friends to help them maintain social connections with others.

“The visiting service is therefore looking to address the social isolation that people can experience as they are ageing — and simply having a visitor call by for a weekly or fortnightly chat and cuppa can do so much,” Matson said.

Volunteers will be asked to commit for a minimum of six months during the project’s pilot stage until early next year.

The Seniors Community Visiting Service is also preparing promotion to reach LGBT seniors across the Brisbane, Sunshine Coast and Gold Coast regions to encourage them to contact Healthy

Communities if they would like to be matched with a visitor. Seniors, their friends, family or carers can enquire about arranging a visitor.

No thanks, the intrusions are too much to bear. However, I do like to look after older citizens especially in this backwards hell-hole called Queensland.
