Mass wedding planned
Attendees at this year’s Labor Party conference will see a potent image of gay rights, as Community Action Against Homophobia attempts to stage the world’s largest gay wedding ceremony.
Organisers of CAAH’s National Day of Action hope to attract over 400 couples to take part in the demonstration on 1 August, which could set a new world record and help pressure the Labor Party to lend support to same-sex marriage.
This is going to be an important year, because we’ve got a lot of the rights that we’ve asked for, so the next logical step is to demand formal recognition of our relationships, CAAH spokesman Simon Margan said.
Our NDA obviously coincides with the Labor meeting which gives us an opportunity to really bring this issue to them and try and get them to reconsider their position.
This really could be a turning point, I think, if we get a lot of ground support.
We’ve got a lot of support from queer Labor groups so far who are keen to push this issue.
It’s pivotal this year that we get as many people as possible to show their support, because if we all just stay home and don’t be a part of it, we’ll be doing ourselves a disservice.
The National Day of Action will meet at 12 noon on August 1 outside Town Hall.

I expect to see the image of gay’s access to the world’s largest gay wedding ceremony
Paul Mitchell – if it’s not about whether you get married or not, but the RIGHT to get married, then you should wake up and smell the roses and realise that you DO have the right to get married – same as everyone else. You just DON’T have the right to marry someone of the same sex – same as everyone else.
Yeahma let me tell you something, It is not wether I or other gay men and lesbians want to get married, it is about the RIGHT to get married (since heterosexuals already have that choice) – it is about FULL EQUALITY under the law and the RIGHT TO CHOOSE to get married.
I am against marriage, full stop. For far too long has the straight-loving religious and political establishment promoted marriage as the royal road to worker reproduction.
On the other hand, having a true love and raising babies is quite the devotion and the fact that GLBTI couples are discriminated against in this way is repulsive and senseless, and another one of said establishments methods of social control.
Grow up, Rudd. Homophobia should have ended with Howard.
When I watch question time Mr Rudd always everytime blantly accuses Mr Turnball of “being completly out-of-touch” – well I think that Mr Rudd should take a good look at himself in the mirror on his own hyprocracy – “Mr Rudd’s [and the Labor parties political policy platform framework structure 2007] policy on marriage being between a man and a woman is really out-of-touch with the 60 percent majority SUPPORT same-sex marriage view here in Australia”! Mr Rudd is such a hypocrite.
Great idea CAAH – good luck and success
To Kevin Rudd and SSO readers and editors,
“Fair shake of the sause bottle” to gay men and lesbians and their partners and just please be fair and reasonable. In a civil and secular (Government) marriage since 1700s – I can assure you Mr Prime Minister, the sky will NOT fall and god will not be angry (as a athiest myself). I can thank the Rudd Labor Government for transexuals the right to marry from 1 July, 2009 – But we still have a long way to go. Society will be MUCH better with equality in marriage because it makes thousands (if not millions) of couples very happy indeed. Let them marry mate!!! – Two consenting adult persons of the same gender should be legally allowed to marry in Australia AND have that marriage recognised if married in Canada or another country that allows SSMs (such as Nepal, Canada, Sweden, Norway, Spain, Holland, Belgium and South Africa). Yes I kown what your saying all of you Nepal?? – what?? – well yes in 2007 homosexuality got legalized, then in 2008 the Surpreme Court of Nepal ordered SSM. At the very least please consider it, 60 percent of the Australian public have considered it and SUPPORT it (Galazy Poll June 2009) – marriage is about love between adult persons, fairness, equality and formal universal recognition (which the alternative civil unions do not provide). I know you are religious, but we live in a secualr society and more and more countries and US states are legalizing same-sex marriage. Two people of the same sex getting married hurts NO ONE.
Religious insitutions can be exempt from the marriage laws – “just keep it civil” (meaning only legal within the Government and not to the churches or the clergy).
However SOME churches whould want to allow same-sex marriages within their doctrines. Churches should NOT be forced into arragements that will make them very cross and angry.
Is it so hard to amend the Commonwealth Marriage Act 1961 from “a union between a man and a woman” to “a union between two (2) adult persons”???????
If you can recall I did have a bill called the “EQUAL MARRIAGE FOR GAYS NOW BILL 2009” – will you consider it Mr Rudd????
Remember that marriages are -œuniversally recognised, while civil unions are NOT universally recognised and are really a -œwatered down version of marriage, also a -œcheap, -œseperate-but-equal or -œapartheid versions of marriage. De facto status and registered partnerships are an excellent start and warmly welcomed, but what is more excellent is full equality in Marriage.
Also please get rid of section 88EA (in the Marriage Act 1961) that says/quotes: “marriage between
a) a man and a man and
b) a woman and a woman
must not be recognised as marriage in Australia.”
The Benefits of same-sex marriage include:
* Universal recognition of relationships;
* Good for the Australian economy;
* Good for Tourism;
* Promotes longer-term monogamous relationships;
* Slows down the HIV/STD rate;
* Show that Australia is not a bigoted country;
* Gay and lesbian persons are just as good as heterosexual persons;
* Gays and lesbians pay their taxes and deserve FULL equality and recognition under the laws and statutes;
* Love is love in the end – IT HARMS NO ONE!!!!
That what gay means “Good As You”.
Or is this a political shit storm that the government wishes to sweep under the carpet and be FEARFUL of a backlash on an upcoming 2010 Election?????
Yours truly,
Paul Mitchell.
