THE iconic Hotel Wickham is undergoing its second major renovation since it wrapped itself in feather bowers and rainbow flags nearly two decades ago.

The historic building has been showing signs of wear over recent years, with significant capital works planned in coming months.

Plans currently before council consultation suggest the downstairs area will be an expansive pub atmosphere leaving the dancers to hot shoe shuffle it upstairs to tread on century old boards.

Staff and patrons have responded to rumours that the venue had seen its last midrift, angle wings and glitter-clad guest, by pointing to their annual celebration the week after Mardi Gras – Big Gay Day – already under planning.

However, venue management group Coles Hotels have not ruled in, or out, the exact target audience. Its spokesperson simply said: “the Hotel Wickham redevelopment will deliver an even better hotel experience for the whole community and Big Gay Day will definitely be celebrated at the Hotel Wickham next year  – we are looking forward to the party.”

A source has reported to the Star Observer that Coles’ biggest competitor Woolworths, through their hotel arm, is considering if the Brunswick Hotel may provide a future home for Brisbane’s talented pool of gender illusionist cabaret acts and their hordes of LGBTI fans.
