Any dream will do

Beau fulfilled his role in the school musical, cast as a sheep. Not a principal character, but a very cute one. His blond hair hung over a white eye mask dotted with cotton wool.

As the lights dimmed in the school hall, the sheep were herded to the centre stage. Beau’s eyes darted around for Dawn, Ma and me. When he caught my eye he waved excitedly, his eyes sparkling.

I noticed most of the kids needed a line drawn on their chins to show bumps, but not my Beau. His little ‘bum chin’ we three share is quite strong, more so in the lights.

Chicky had been to the matinee with Dawn’s mother. He was most confused and clearly annoyed with the fact that the main character, Joseph, was played by a girl.
“Dad, Joseph is wearing lipstick and it’s a girl.” His eyebrows knotted together, still playing with Bullseye from Toy Story.

“Well, anything is possible Chick.”

I turned to my mum and said, “Welcome to drag, eh?” to her laughing.

The show was outstanding. There was a pint-sized JLo in pigtails, singing her heart out. Her shrill start to songs in the microphone sent adults flying into the back of their seats, but she was gorgeous.

The hermaphrodite Joseph was sung beautifully by a sweet girl who Beau couldn’t take his eyes off at the end of the show as he sang the final chorus with his mates in fluffy cotton ball faces.

All the eye makeup and sarongs and the sometimes adult scenes made us crack up laughing at times.

Some kids relished the spotlight, others caved in under the pressure to sing solo.
Once it was over we collected Beau from his green room. I put my coat over his costume and carried him to the car.

“I’m so proud of you Beau, you were a fantastic Mr Sheep. Maybe one day you can do some singing.” He nodded happily.

So Beau is scheduled to star as a cute sheep for another night, tonight, and he told his mum he’s not performing tonight as he doesn’t want to go to school at night.

While he does raise a valid point, I can’t help notice the diva coming out in the boy.
