Let the ladies come to you

If you’ve received one too many odd looks at the video store after renting Tipping the Velvet, or have been underwhelmed by the list of Amazonian titles available through Amazon, a new website is about to solve your problems.

The lesbian-only site, lovetheladies.com, has been set up to provide easy access to an extensive range of lesbian-related DVDs and books.

Started by partners Kim Mullarvey and Chenoa Alman, the site is designed to provide more than just a shopping experience.

What makes this different from Amazon or eBay, is that we’re trying to make it more personal, Mullarvey explained.

It’s not just about making heaps of money. It’s about making things accessible. Especially in rural areas, girls can’t just walk into a normal bookstore or DVD store and get what we provide. And some girls don’t like going into those stores even when they know it’s available, so it’s to offer that service to them and to make people aware of what’s out there.

Based on months of research and work to access distributors from overseas, the list of titles available is impressive.

Mullarvey and Alman also aim to ensure that the service puts an end to extensive waiting periods.

We know how frustrating it is to wait because some companies bulk order. So we want to make it personalised and keep people up-to-date. We also want to get a newsletter out there so people can know what’s going on and what’s coming up in new lesbian DVDs and books, as well as what’s going on in the community. We would like to start up some sort of state by state update on things coming up for people in their area.

If all goes well with the site, the girls are keen to expand to an actual store featuring a whole range of lesbian merchandise, including fashion.
