REPORTS have emerged that ISIS have stoned two gay men to death in Syria.

According to the Syrian Observatory of Human Rights, the executions, which allegedly took place on Tuesday, are believed to be the militant organisation’s first in relation to alleged homosexuality.

The two men, aged 20 and 18, were reportedly killed in the eastern province of Deir Ezzor near the border of Iraq.

The executions came about after ISIS found videos on the 20-year-old’s mobile phone that appeared to show him “practising indecent acts with males”.

The 18-year-old met his fate just based on accusations alone.

The two men were also reportedly opponents of ISIS, but homosexuality was used as an excuse for their murder.

  1. I think it’s important to mention that it’s not confirmed if they were actually gay, something this article alludes to. It’s a very common practice in Muslim countries to allege or charge political enemies with homosexuality to further humiliate them and isolate their supporters. An example of this is what has happened with Anwar Ibrahim in Malaysia several years ago. ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anwar_Ibrahim )

Stoning is an abhorrent form of torture, and the persecution of homosexuals in Western Asia is intolerable – but the facts should be presented in the story of the news, not as glib summations of allegations for easy social media consumption.

  2. Well speaking in defence of the observer , the headline is enough. The story is played with a straight bat and that is all that is required. I don’t think we need outrage and angst over an event that is obviously distressing.

  3. I support Michael Hunter’s feedback: if you are going to post something of this nature, SSO, then a bit of critically informed editorial is obviously not too much to ask, in fact, it’s expletive mandatory, so get on it, do some real investigative journalism, research, analyse, synthesise, evaluate, report and recommend. A four year old says “that’s bad”. Your readership very reasonably expects more from you. Get on it.

  4. Sorry Star Observer, but “our thoughts are with the victims”..? Could you please edit the comment to something a little less casual? Thoughts won’t do them much good right now, because they’re not victims. They’re dead bodies..
