Harmonious relationship recognised

The City of Sydney dedicated Harmony Park as San Francisco Place on Thursday, commemorating the city’s links with the gay and lesbian community of San Francisco.

“We really aren’t marking our sister cities in a strong way, as a city,” City of Sydney councillor Phillip Black said. “We needed somewhere in the City of Sydney where we could mark our oldest, and longest-standing sister city, San Francisco.

“In the future we could develop it — there could be tree planting, or other options.

“It’s to mark that longstanding connection between the two cities, which very strongly links to our GLBT communities, which we’re trying to boost.”

The idea emerged from a delegation’s trip to San Francisco, which saw Black and fellow gay councillor Shayne Mallard meet with San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom and leaders from the gay and lesbian community.

info: Harmony Park is in Goulburn St, Surry Hills.
