Bear makes move from small screen to music charts

Beauty and the Bear co-host Nathan Little will trade the screen for the stage on Thursday night, when he debuts the EP of his and bandmate Amy Bodossian’s absurdist electro pop duo, The Bad Father.

The launch of Demonstration follows their appearance on ABC’s Spicks and Specks and Little’s new queer arts program each week on Foxtel’s Aurora Channel.

Labelled ‘queer, camp and culturally provocative’, the eccentric pair first arrived on the scene at the Adelaide 2007 Feast Festival and have since played at major festivals across Australia, amassing a healthy queer and alternative following. The duo’s Correction Tour earned them a Green Room Award nomination for Best Cabaret Ensemble in 2010.

“We’re sort of Monty Python meets Madonna with lots of sparkly outfits — almost a Eurovision contest,” Little told the Star Observer.

“But even though it’s flashy, the content is quite dark. We talk about male-female relationships, from divorce and everything through to married men having sex at gay beats.”

The Bad Father have been particularly embraced by the Bear community, and the odd love affair has resulted in their hosting the Mr Bear South Australia competition three years in a row. Fans of Little will also know he was voted Southern Hibearnation Cub in 2007.

“I was representing South Australia in the Laird’s Bear competition and The Bad Father happened to be performing in the same building, so they asked us both to come down and host. I guess they liked our banter and the way we interviewed the contestants because we’ve been asked back to do it a few times now.

“They ended up adopting Amy as an honorary Bear — she says she’s hairy on the inside.”

info: The Bad Father will debut their EP tonight (Thursday, May 19), at The Order of Melbourne from 8.30pm. The EP is also available for download at the iTunes store. See Nathan Little and Miz Ima Starr each Thursday on Beauty and the Bear, from 7pm on the Aurora Channel.
