Biden favours equality

US vice president Joe Biden has stated he is “absolutely comfortable” with same-sex couples being allowed the same civil rights as opposite-sex couples.

In an interview with NBC’s Meet The Press on Sunday, Biden appeared to be shifting to support same-sex marriage, saying he is in favour of equal rights for same-sex couples in relationships.

“I am absolutely comfortable with the fact that men marrying men, women marrying women and heterosexual men and women marrying one another are entitled to the same exact rights, all the civil rights, all the civil liberties,” he said.

Marriage equality advocates in the US have seized on Biden’s remarks as a signal he is in support of change.

So far President Barack Obama has remained opposed to same-sex marriage, however, he has said his personal views were “evolving”.

Following the interview, Biden’s office insisted he had not broken ranks with Obama, but held a view that same-sex couples should have the same rights protections as straight couples.
