Lady Gaga’s charity’s spending questioned

LADY Gaga’s Born This Way Foundation is under scrutiny this week as entertainment website shobiz411.com uncovered its expenses for 2012.

The website found that in 2012 $2.6 million worth of donations where received by the foundation, which is run by the pop star’s mother Cynthia Germanotta, with only $5000 spent on grants to organisations or individuals.

The information comes from the foundation’s federal tax report, and while there is no record of where most of the year’s donations came from, it is alleged on the site that most of the money came from Gaga’s own earnings.

A list of the foundation’s expenses for 2012 were as follows:

$300,000 in strategic consulting
$62,836 on stage productions
$50,000 on social media
$50,000 on event coordination
$406,552 on legal
$150,000 on philanthropic consulting
$60,000 on research
$58,768 on publicity fees
$78,000 on travel
$72,000 on salaries
$808,661 on “other”
$5000 on grants to organisations or individuals

With a tour set for Australia later this year, questions have been raised in the media to the exact purpose of the foundation, especially with a mission statement that says:

“Foster a more accepting society, where differences are embraced and individuality is celebrated. The Foundation is dedicated to creating a safe community that helps connect young people with the skills and opportunities they need to build a kinder, braver world.

“We believe that everyone has the right to feel safe, to be empowered and to make a difference in the world. Together, we will move towards acceptance, bravery and love.”
